Interesting. I know from my line of work that scanning (or actively "looking" for things to "see") helps you pick out things that you'd normally miss. The military technique is a quadrant scan where you search areas them move on. Of course it is complicated by moving, because the content of the arease is always changing. I really only use that technique when not moving (as in hunting from a stand).
The MSF taught a techunique where you pick things out, look and evaluate, then move quickly to another. I try to do this and include both mirrors and the instrument panel. You really ahve to practice, and it keeps you hopping, but I've noticed that it helps me ride safer and better. I don't have a "pattern" that I follow, but I try to keep myself from lingering on anything for more than enough time to evaluate how it might impact me.
